I was asked this question by Gemini Blues on Linda-goodman.com. I really enjoy writing articles to answer questions. That way, I know people are interested in the topic. It makes it much more satisfying.

Astrology is all about BLENDING Before we can blend, we have to identify and understand the players. In this case, the players are Neptune and Mars and the opposition

First, let’s look at the NATURE of the opposition. The opposition deals with opposite poles. Let’s give a practical example. With a very moody person, she may be very, very happy one day. She nay be very, very sad the next day. In the course of a week, she may be happy/sad, happy/sad, happy/sad, happy/sad. You may ask her WHY she cannot simply be “normal.” She may say that she really has no idea how to be this way. All she understands is the extremes. That is the nature of the opposition.

Let’s look at Neptune. Neptune is the planet that fogs. Neptune takes things that are concrete and makes them amorphous(not concrete). Let’s give some examples. A wonderful musician can take us from the material realm to that of the imagination. A drug addict is transported from the material world into the world of fantasy.A fine writer uses Neptune when she allows us to get lost in her story. Neptune is the planet that rules drug abuse, as well as the creative arts. In all these cases, Neptune blurs the lines of reality.

Let’s look at Mars. Mars is the planet of action, assertion and meeting goals. If you watch how people set and try to achieve their goals, you are observing their Mars. There are many ways to reach goals. Some are positive. Some are ineffectual. The Mars in the chart shows how this plays out.

That brings us to our topic—Neptune oppose Mars. Since Neptune takes us away from the material world, we may have a person who tends/wants to escape. He may escape into addictions, ranging from shopping to heroin. He may escape into activities such as sports or TV. The point is that Neptune is the planet of escapism.

Mars is the planet of drive. Hence, this native may find that he tries to set goals but can’t seem to really go forward with them.

The opposition is a back and forth motion. He may set goals one day. He may escape the next. He may decide to ask that cute girl out on the date one day and decide to stay home and watch TV the next.

There will be a struggle between goal setting/drive/ assertion/passion and escaping. That would be a simple way to explain this, although not exhaustive. I hope that helped!
